About CASE StudY

Case Study 01 was a project aimed to understand more of a Dwelling, in which would better prepare us for Project One, in which we are tasked to design a dwelling.

For Case Studies, we were tasked to research on two architectural dwellings, one of a local context while the other of an international context. This allows us to learn the site and cultural specific considerations in which the architect had to consider while designing the house.

Focused on the comparison and WHY factor of the dwellings' designs, Case Study allowed us to understand more of the pragmatics which comes into play while designing a dwelling. Furthermore, this allows us to take into account details and measures that could be considered for the project one dwelling.

About My group's FINDINGS

The international house that we researched on was the House VI, by world famous architect, Peter Eisenman.

From the case study, my main take away from this house was Peter Eisenman's theory and idea of Architecture. Though not given the chance to practice as an architect and spent most of his time theorizing instead, it has allowed him to be more focused on notions and concepts in which he explored in both his theorised works and practiced works.

Though fully functional as a house, House VI provided certain juntions of unease and unfamiliarity as compared to a usual house a Eisenman refused to erase them, saying "The house is a record of the process" where if he were to correct it, it would be "Going against the whole project".

Meanwhile, the "local" house is House with Balls in Gujarat, India. From this house, I've learnt more about the delight of minimalism, from the aesthetic of the house to the use of materials to the details in which used in the house. Under a certain budget and with the influence of interest in automobile mechanics, the architect, The Matharoo Associates, utilises simple recycled materials to function the house in mechanics in the unique window panes, door locks and lamps within the minimal house.

More importantly, the house was designed more on the functionality and pragmaticsto fulfil the client's want to rear his exotic fish for his fishing business, as well as using the house as a holiday home for his family. This therefore, initiated the design to be of a dwelling in which allowed all views to view the fish pools from above and below, and also having these pools raise the sense of the users through the play sound, sigh and of light within the interior spaces.
