OSIP
(overseas social innovation program)

About
OSIP

The Overseas Social Innovation Program is an opted program to execute the module overseas to real life benefactors.

The participated one brought the group to Yogyakarta, Indonesia. We collaborated with students from UMY (Muhammadiyah University of Yogyakarta) and aimed to aid Ibu Puji, our benefactor, in expanding her mushroom business in a nearby mushroom village.

Projects

With the presented issue, the group conducted interviews and observations during the homestay with the client in the mushroom village. The problem is assessed and evaluated before presenting its solutions.

The group realised the actual problem of the stunted growth of the business and presented the problem statement of:

" Villagers need the means to start and sustain my mushroom farming business."

With this, the group presented three solutions per mean, all of which, a prototype was made.

2) Means of knowledge - Mushroom Library

The mushroom library utilised an old unfurnished hut that held Ibu-Ibu meetings (meetings among mothers) and the mushroom group's meetings every fortnight. These meetings were traditionally held by unrolling a mat to sit on on the floor. Additionally, children play football on the adjacent field every weekend and occassionally hang out in the hut.

The proposed furnishing of the hut intends to create a fusion of the traditional village meeting place and a library for the children and adults. Utilising the existing column-beam structure, the proposed intervention has visual connectivity between the two spaces of varied programs. This encourages villagers to read the books if they were resting under the shelter of the hut. This would also allow children to pick up reading, increasing the low literacy rate of the village.

Ideally, the library would have children and adult's graphical books as well as books on mushroom and mushroom farming. This allows the intervention to serve its purpose of spreading knowledge about the mushroom farming and simultaneously promote a conducive learning environment.

2) Financial Mean - Financial Storyboarding

The storyboard is intended to teach the villagers of the procedure to claim the loans to the initial capital of raising the funds that they need to start their business. However, these steps could also be taken to sustain their business should they require additional funding for expansion or to cover for setbacks.

The "Requirements" portion was later zoomed into detail in Bahasa Indonesia for the locals. The documents were planned out by the students of UMY after researching banks and finding the most suitable loan scheme for the villagers. The finished product presented two schemes - and individual scheme and a group scheme.

3) Means of Experience - Mushroom Starter Kit

The mushroom starter kit is a personal baglog (Medium to grow mushroom) that is designed for minimal space consumption and easy to use with instructions on the kit itself. It simulates the growing of mushrooms as if they were to grow in the business, however, at a personal scale. This allows the villagers to kick the stigma of assumptions of the mushroom farming business - many villagers think it requires a lot of time, a lot of space, intricate care etc. These stigmas therefore stop them from venturing into the village's business, hindering its growth as a business.
