About Prelude Studies

We are required to build an installation inspired by an artist for this prelude studies.

As a cohort, we chose an artist from a group of 12 artists:

Tara Donovan          Gordon Matta Clark          John Clang

RED Hong Yi          Hussein Chalayan          Issey Miyake

Piet Mondrian          Wassily Kandinsky          Ai Wei Wei

 Turf          Mikhail Baryshnikov          Andy Warhol

From there, we had to research about the artiste's works, methods, ideas, intents and philosophy before proceeding to think about the installation that we were going to install. Recording and brainsorming everything on our A1 mindmap, we then started on our exploration into the installation before finally installing it within the first level of W5A common space.

About My group's installation

As a group, we chose Tara Donovan as our artiste.

Tara Donovan's works focuses on using mundane everyday material and through accumulation, transform these everyday materials into art forms. This changes the perspective of the material as the final installation's form does not look to be made up of such materials from afar, but is distinctly revealed when up close to the installation.

Her works also focuses on mimiking the way of nature but not nature itself. This relates to her final installaton's form as they take on a natural form, yet she have never worked with an end form in mind. One of her main concepts was also to mimik growth and make her installation seem to expand infinitely.

We decided to take on an Egoistic approach into designing our design as Tara Donovan does not share her thought processes as she does her installations.

After experimentations on materials from straws to newspapers to paper, we decided to use A4 paper that was cut into 3 different sizes and then folded into half and glued.

We then started to experiment on the modules of the installations, where each team member worked to form their own and majority voted for the one to use.

Then we experimented on the folds. Angle of folds, size of folds, number of folds. These were all experimented to then form then final module.

Our installation also takes on the accumulation of modules. These modules each express a parasitic way of movement and growth, where they 'grow' from inside the walls to get bigger before disappearing into the walls again. This is shown through constant meandering growth throughout the W5A corridor (outside plotter room), the curved brick wall, the teachers' wall and the stairs, disrupting the space of others' installations.

The intent of the installation is to raise awareness of human activities that are detrimental to the Earth. Just because there is no immediate consequence, humans take it for granted that they can continue building structures and destroying the Earth. We decide to use our installation as a voice of nature, seeking retribution for the damage it has taken. This is shown through the organic form of our module and final installation's form, and the action of it growing and disrupting others' installations (seen to as man-made interventions).
