About the Primer
Primer 2 is a structure of any function that is sound to support the Changi Chapel Museum as a post-museum or pre-museum visit.
The structure has to incorcorporate three zones, with each zone attampting to express an emotion gotten from Prelude Studies 01. This structure therefore relates back to our chosen war hero. However, the structure is not meant to be dedicated to the war hero, but meant to be dedicated to the people like the war hero during the Second World War.
Primer 2 facilitates in creating spaces that evoke atmosphere theough the attempt to express emotions. This also aids in our growth as a person, where empathy is a key emotion we must feel ourself while doing this primer to be able to express our emotions through the zones.
Constraints :
11x11 m site boundary (1:1)
Not more than 81m^2 of built area (1:1)
About My structure
With my theme from Prelude Studies 01 to be "Remembrance", my structure took on a function of a post-museum memorial - a place of remembrance. It is meant to be a memorial dedicated to the fallen soldiers in the Second World War. The three emotions that my memorial attempts to express are (in order): Agitation, Devastated and Nostalgia.
Agitation takes on a transitional zone, acting as the entrance of the memorial and bringing the visitor down to my second zone, located in the basement. Agitation was attempted to be expressed through the act of confinement by tapering of this zone, both in horizontal width and vertical headroom.
Devastated was attempted to be expresssed through scale and form. The form of the second zone took on a cylindrical form, with the names of all the soldiers fallen during the war to be inscribed onto the walls of this zone. By using a cylindrical form, the notion of a never ending list of inscribed names was expressed. The scale of the zone emphasises on that notion by being 2.5 times taller than an average 1.7m tall person. This also expresses the extent of suffering and damage Singapore had to go through during and after the war.
Nostalgia was attempted to be expressed through the elevation from the second zone, into an abundance of daylight. It is an open zone, therefore visitors could experience the positive aura nature evokes thourhg the open roof view of trees surrounding the structure. This zone provides a rest space for the visitors to allow them to take a rest before exiting and also contemplate about the museum and the previous zones, as it may be too overwhelming for the visitors. This zone then leads to the exit of the memorial.
